Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe, so long associated with Soviet communism, is now accessible as the countries and cities unite with the West.  Hungary led the way in the 1980’s with the opening of its borders.  After the Berlin wall came down, the Czech Republic,and Sloviakia among others soon followed in the transition to democracy. 

Consider Croatia, and its vibrant capital Zagreb, with its restored 19th century architecture, and spirited populace, typified every day in the many cafes along Tkalecieva street.  The city is influenced by the Mediterranean and Central European cultures, made evident in the cuisine, street life and Austro-Hungarian architecture.

Just 50 miles east of Italy and a four-hour drive from Vienna, lies Llubljana, Slovenia.  The city is complete with neighborhood markets and cafes, cobblestone squares and the scenic Llubljanica River, spanned by the pedestrian Triple Bridge designed by the architect Joze Plecnik, whose influence is also seen in the city of Prague.

Or consider Poland, whose eastern and western traditions can be appreciated in musical events and festivals in such cities as Wroclaw, Poznan, Szczecin and or in the Eastern city of Jaroslaw.  Learn about Poland’s contributions to music as you follow the route of its most famous composers, such as Chopin and the great pianist Padrewski.
