Benelux Countries

The Benelux countries, The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, form the heartland of the European Communities. The special position of the Benelux countries is due not only to their natural characteristics.  Their history and evolution made the three countries an extraordinary part of Europe. Situated between Germany and France and looking across the sea towards England, they maintain a character of their own.

The Kingdom of The Netherlands.  Nearly 80 percent of the country is below seal level. By slowly reclaiming land, building dykes, draining the Zuiderzee, and the Delta Plan of 1957, the Dutch have created a unique and inviting landscape of canals, waterways, agricultural pasturelands and interesting towns and villages.

The Kingdom of Belgium comprises 43 districts and three distinct languages. The Dutch Flemish speaking people to the north, the German speaking peoples to the west and the French speaking people to the south. The famous medieval ports and merchant cities of Belgium help to make this small country one of the most important commercial centers in Europe.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg lying on the German side of the dividing line between the Romance and the Germanic populations is one of the smallest nations in Europe. Luxembourg, along with Belgium and the Netherlands formed the Benelux Union in 1944. The capital of the Grand Duchy is the city of Luxembourg. The city today is one of the key cities of the European Union and is home to the European Parliament. 

A concert tour through the Benelux countries will include individual formal concerts as well as informal recitals.  There are many wonderful churches, parks and local events in which to participate.
