Russia & the Baltics
Russia is a vast destination, but many tours allow a visit to Russia in combination with Finland, or the Baltic. Visit Imperial St. Petersburg, one of the most opulent cities in the world. Every spring, St Petersburg's famous Mariinsky Theatre has hosted the Stars of the White Nights festival. This festival is a must for ballet, opera and classical music lovers. The annual White Nights Festival derives its name from the short summer season when the sun never sets, and the beauty of these white nights contributes to the festival’s special atmosphere.
In Moscow, see Red Square, the Lenin Mausoleum, St. Basils’, the Kremlin, and the Armory Museum, where Ivan the Terrible’s throne, and the Faberge eggs are on display. There are museums and art galleries in Moscow that boast unparalleled treasures of the world's greatest artists. And then there are opera, ballet, and folk art. Nearby is Pushkin and Catherine’s Palace.
Also combinable Russia or parts of Scandinavia are the Baltic countries, three former Soviet states, each with its own distinct language and culture.
Estonia. This compact corner of the Baltic is drawing trendy visitors seeking new destinations. Although a former Soviet Republic, Estonia shares ethnic and linguistic roots with the Finns. The countryside is dotted with medieval castles and manors. Tallinn, the capital, is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities, famed for its ancient stone walls; winding, cobbled streets and torch lit alleys; secret stairways; and tower ramparts. Various cultural and musical events take place throughout the year, including the International Choir Festival, taking place in April 2005.
Latvia is known as “the land that sings.” The entire country is a symphony of sights, sounds and experiences. Today as Latvia joins NATO and the European Union, more and more people are discovering why Latvia has always been a keystone of the Baltic.
Largest and southernmost of the Baltic nations, Lithuania is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south and Poland and the Russian Federation to the southwest. The capital, Vilnius, is one of the most beautiful old towns in eastern Europe, situated where the Neris and Vilnia rivers meet and surrounded by picturesque wooded hills. Founded in 1323, its unique character and architecture reflects its history at the crossroads of the Roman, Byzantine and Eurasian worlds.
